Happy in Hopkins

Cleverly described as a “drinking town with a fishing problem,” we found ourselves very happy and at home in the sleepy town of Hopkins, Belize. After a week of hotels and tours in both San Ignacio and Placencia, Hopkins was just what we needed to slow down. The best thing we did while in Hopkins? Absolutely nothing. It was perfect.

Just a 30-mile bus ride from Placencia, we split a cab with two couples for the 4-mile drive into town from the bus stop. We hopped off near a store, purchased a few cervezas and enjoyed the stroll north to Lebeha Cabanas. The great thing about Hopkins is the simplicity – there are only two main roads that contain most of the lodging and restaurants. After a short time in Hopkins, we could see that life here is simple, a great reminder that you don’t need much in life to be relaxed and content.

The charm of the town lies largely in the friendly people that occupy it. Every person you pass acknowledges you – a far cry from where we live in the states. “Goodnight, Goodnight” is a common greeting as you walk down the street at dusk.

Not to mention that for the size, this place has many amazing places to eat. We never went hungry or without a good meal. From fresh seafood to Indian curry or a one-pound pork chop and gecko balls (yep you read that right!), we enjoyed riding bikes through town to check out the daily meals.

Hopkins serves as a great jumping off point to explore the Jaguar Preserve nearby, take a full-day snorkel trip to Glovers Reef, or even zipline through the jungle. As for us, we found ourselves enjoying lazy days walking on the beach, playing in the ocean, and dodging potholes during bike rides.

The days seemed to slow down and last longer, with time passing as slowly as the gentle lapping waves of the ocean. For the first time in months we found ourselves truly relaxed.

The biggest regret for our time in Hopkins? Not planning to stay longer! We stayed for 3 nights and easily would have sacrificed some time in Placencia or Caye Caulker to stay a little longer. All the more reason to plan a trip in the future.
